Through a twisted combination of ill fate, inherited cunning, blind faith, bad luck and untameable ambition, two young men, both ample of brain and handsome of face, came together one day and decided to make magic happen. The form their magic took was brain fried acid techno and their title bestowed – Riot In Belgium.
So named after their shared love of waffles, dark chocolate and Technotronic, Bennie Single and Joel Dickson started making music as Riot In Belgium in 2005, having both DJ’d in Sydney and Melbourne for some time prior, Bennie as DJ Damage of The Bang Gang based in Sydney and Joel as DJ Belgium, formerly of Cut Copy and based in Melbourne. Time spent working on their studio tan came whenever either travelled interstate to DJ, and the rest of their time apart was spent yousendit-ing sounds and samples till the fat lady cried riot.
Their first foray into the studio together gave birth to the neu rave monster known as The Acid Never Lies, a bleeping, driving stormer that brought the duo to the attention of Swiss dance music conniseur Robi Insinna AKA Headman, who promptly signed them to his Relish imprint. The Acid Never Lies was released early 2006 to instant fans including Tiga, 2 Many DJ’s, Cut Copy and Pete Tong, and requests came in for Riot In Belgium to remix the likes of K.I.M [The Presets], Sneaky Sound System, new French star Surkin, Freeform Five and their own label boss, and they’re to contribute the next instalment in Ministry Of Sound’s Mashed mix series.
Riot In Belgium’s second and current release on Relish is La Musique – a frenetic, electronic bodyspasm of a tune, a surefire dancefloor winner at every roll of the dice and a confident step onwards and upwards from The Acid Never Lies. From the opening, whispering French sweet nothings and cosmic disco synth stabs, to a breakdown that would make Thomas and Guy-Man proud and a relentlessly ecstatic closing, La Musique is Riot In Belgium’s finest moment to date and a frighteningly assuring sign of things to come.
