Don Cash – part Prince, part Green Velvet, 100% new wave hip hop original, has been bubbling under for some time now. The Toronto born and bred electronic rap pioneer has been producing and releasing records on his Toronto based label Stereoeagle since 2001. His first appearance on Headman’s groundbreaking Relish Records label came last year when Headman himself heard one of Don’s electrifying DJ sets whilst on tour in North America, which led to his blockbuster electro jams Baby’s Red and Don’t Crash featured on the Headman-mixed Relish Compilation and Relish Compilation EP.
Don Cash’s music is barely definable – he would probably describe it as rock n’ roll with a hip-hop beat and made of electronic sounds. “People are always asking what kind of music I make” he says, “usually tell them “rock & roll” because that’s what it is… when I give people this answer they look at me like I’m trying to act cute, but really it’s only rock and roll but I like it, yes I do”. His artistic influences ranges from hip hop to the reggae and funk that he listened to with his dad and uncles – several of whom were DJs in Toronto’s Jamaican community – to chart pop and rock such as the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Wonder.. To put it bluntly, Don Cash wants to change music history by creating a new style that he calls new-wave rap “In my music, I have purposely juxtaposed elements and styles that people don’t think go together to make a new kind of music that we can all enjoy — a lot of people have gone down this road, but I was blessed enough to be one of the few who made it work… when you look back on the history of rock & roll that how it all started… but it’s important to remember that artists like Chuck Berry consciously set out to combine blues and jazz and country to make a new music… it didn’t happen by accident — these guys were smart motherfuckers who wanted to change the world and came up with way to do it. Don Cash’s album is no accident either – the work of one more smart motherfucker out to change the world one dancefloor at a time.
